President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the law “On the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes”.
The document was adopted by the Legislative Chamber on July 2, 2019 and approved by the Senate on August 23.
The law states that facilities for the use of nuclear energy may be in state ownership or in the ownership of legal entities determined by the president of Uzbekistan. The authorized government body in the field of nuclear energy is the Ministry of Energy.
The decision on the construction of a nuclear facility (NF) and/or storage facility (SF) is made by the President of Uzbekistan at the proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers. The decision to select a site for the placement of an NF and/or SF is made by the Cabinet of Ministers.
In order to ensure safety, the following special territories are established in the area where the NF and/or SF are located:
- sanitary protection zone - a special territory with a special regime of use;
- observation zone - the territory in which the radiation exposure of a nuclear facility and/or storage facility is likely to affect the population living in this zone;
- security zone - a territory with a special legal regime.
