Uzbekistan sees fivefold growth in IELTS success among youth
The number of young people in Uzbekistan achieving notable scores on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has surged significantly, with nearly 53,000 test-takers scoring 5.5 or higher in 2024. This figure marks a fivefold increase compared to 2020, according to data provided by the British Council and IDP, shared by Alisher Sadullayev, Director of the Youth Affairs Agency.
Over the past four years, the number of Uzbek youth scoring between 7 and 8 (equivalent to the C1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR) has grown by 7.4 times. In 2020, 1,807 test-takers achieved this score range, while in 2024, the number rose to 13,424.
The highest scores — ranging from 8.5 to 9, corresponding to the CEFR C2 level — have also seen remarkable growth. In 2020, only 14 individuals attained this level. By 2024, this figure had climbed to 332, reflecting the increasing proficiency of Uzbek youth in English.
Overall, the data highlight a significant trend of improvement in English language proficiency across Uzbekistan, with more students successfully achieving globally recognized benchmarks in language competency.
