Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan sign prisoner transfer agreement

Inmates from both countries will now have the opportunity to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home countries. President Mirziyoyev has signed a law ratifying the agreement between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on the transfer of convicted persons to continue serving their sentences in their respective homelands. This means that both countries can now exchange prisoners on a reciprocal basis.

The agreement was originally inked on July 18, 2024, in Tashkent during the visit of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.

The prisoner exchange will take place through the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border checkpoint "Dostlik/Dostuk." The agreement also outlines provisions related to the coverage of expenses, resolution of disputes, official languages, and other mechanisms necessary for implementation.

Under the agreement, the Prosecutor General’s Offices of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are designated as the central authorities responsible for enforcing the treaty.

These efforts are aimed at supporting the social rehabilitation of prisoners, helping them maintain family ties, and strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

According to available data, there are currently around 100 Uzbek citizens serving sentences in Kyrgyzstan and about 50 Kyrgyz citizens incarcerated in Uzbekistan.
