Dozens of violations, zero accountability: Fergana police cancel fines for chief’s wife’s car

Traffic safety officers in Fergana have dropped 61 fines against a Chevrolet Malibu, claiming the violations were committed “under circumstances of extreme necessity.” However, Kun.uz, citing multiple independent sources, confirmed that the car belongs to the wife of the head of Fergana’s Regional Traffic Safety Department, Lieutenant Colonel Akmal Akhmedov.

The situation gained traction after social media posts alleged that over a hundred violations committed by the vehicle had been improperly dismissed. In response, the Regional Traffic Safety Department stated that an internal investigation had been launched, resulting in disciplinary actions against five of its employees.

According to officials, all the canceled fines related to the vehicle with license plate 40 081 SBA have now been reinstated and collected “in accordance with regulations.”

When contacted by Kun.uz for further comment, the department’s press secretary, Elbek Qobilov, stated:

“A total of 61 traffic violations committed by this vehicle in 2024–2025 had been canceled. After the internal review, all fines were recovered. I do not have information on the total amount of these fines.”

Qobilov also admitted that he had not analyzed the types of violations committed by the vehicle and did not know what most of them entailed. However, video footage circulating on social media clearly shows the Malibu with the aforementioned license plate running multiple red lights, among other offenses.

It remains unclear whether Akmal Akhmedov directly ordered the fines to be erased or whether his subordinates acted on their own initiative to protect their superior’s spouse.
