New smart meters to replace outdated water meters across Tashkent

More than 670,000 consumers in Tashkent will be equipped with modern smart water meters over the next five years – free of charge. The installation costs will be covered by Tashkent City Water Supply JSC as part of an international project being implemented in cooperation with the French company SUEZ, according to an official statement from the water utility.

The initiative began with a pilot phase in Shaykhontohur district. Smart meters will now be installed gradually across all districts of the city. Households will receive the devices at no cost.

“The project is aimed at installing smart water meters in private residences. Its goal is to improve drinking water control and monitoring systems through digital technologies.

“The older generation of meters caused inconvenience for both the utility company and consumers. For example, delayed input of meter readings into the system often led to billing discrepancies. In addition, consumers were unable to access detailed data about their water consumption,” the official announcement noted.

The new smart meters offer convenience for both parties. Equipped with radio modules, they transmit data remotely and accurately, without external interference. They monitor water usage, pipeline pressure, and the condition of system components in real time.

Consumers with smart meters will no longer need to manually submit their readings to the billing system. Moreover, they will be able to track water usage and resolve billing questions online through their personal accounts, and make payments via mobile applications.

The utility provider will be able to collect data remotely, helping to prevent unaccounted water losses and improve the efficiency of water distribution management.

The smart meters will come with a 5-year warranty from the manufacturer. Any defects discovered during the warranty period will be addressed according to the terms of service and maintenance.

Following the successful pilot in Shaykhontohur district, mass installation will begin in the third quarter of this year in Yangihayot district. Other districts will be covered gradually according to a set schedule.

Tashkent City Water Supply JSC clarified that no welding or plumbing work will be carried out during the installation process. Only existing meters will be replaced with smart ones. The organization has asked residents to grant technicians access to their homes.

For questions related to the installation process, residents can contact representatives at temporary local coordination offices that will be set up in each neighborhood.

Previously, it was announced that the private sector would be involved in the verification of water meters.
