Sanitary Committee rules out chikungunya outbreak in Uzbekistan

The chikungunya virus, which has recently been detected in nearly 3,000 people in China over the course of a week, poses no threat to Uzbekistan. According to the Sanitary and Epidemiological Committee, the mosquito species that transmit the virus are not found in the country’s natural environment.

The committee confirmed that chikungunya, which has seen a surge in China, will not spread in Uzbekistan. The virus is transmitted by a specific type of mosquito that does not inhabit Uzbekistan.

In the Chinese province of Guangdong, over 2,800 people were diagnosed with chikungunya in the span of one week. Between July 27 and August 2, 2,892 new cases of infection were reported.

“The outbreak has been brought under control, but serious challenges remain in terms of prevention and containment due to the presence of mosquitoes that transmit the virus,” said Kan Min, chief infectious disease expert at the Guangdong Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
