Uzbekistan uses NASA satellite data and AI to map regional economic growth
The Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) has, for the first time, used NASA’s nighttime lights (NTL) satellite data combined with artificial intelligence technologies to analyze economic activity across Uzbekistan’s regions and cities.

The study’s results revealed a strong correlation between satellite data and official statistics. According to NTL data, Uzbekistan’s per capita gross regional product (GRP) increased by 63.5% from 2020 to 2024 – rising from $2,011 to $3,287. This figure is close to the official growth rate of 59.4%.
The most significant growth was observed in Tashkent, where per capita GRP rose by $3,200 over five years, reaching $7,200. In some districts of the capital – including Mirabad, Yakkasaray, and Yunusabad – the figure exceeds $9,000, nearly twice the average level of other major cities across the country.
The analysis also showed notable economic growth in several regions, including Navoi, Namangan, Fergana, and Samarkand. High levels of economic activity were also recorded in small and medium-sized cities such as Zarafshan, Karshi, Chirchik, Margilan, and Termez.
Satellite-based nighttime light data also enabled an assessment of the degree of urbanization. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of districts with high levels of illumination – typically associated with urban agglomerations – increased from 21 to 26.
Meanwhile, the number of dimly lit rural areas fell from 129 to 102. As a result, 27 districts are showing signs of transitioning toward urban-style development.
Experts note that the rise in urbanization, growing economic activity, and expansion of the services sector are clear signs of successful structural transformation. Similar trends have recently been observed in other dynamic economies, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
